The Travellers Rest
Steep Lane,
SOWERBY,
HX6 1PE
The 17th-century former coaching inn sits high on a steep hillside with stunning views, a dining terrace for savouring the sunsets, a duck pond, space for camping, and a helipad. Restored and refurbished with style a decade ago by Caroline Lumley, it continues to draw the crowds despite its rural location. The appeal is the cosy stone-flagged bar, which boasts fresh flowers, a blazing winter log fire and Little Valley Brewery beers on tap, and the comfortable restaurant, with its exposed stone wall and beams, animal print sofas and eclectic pub menus. Dishes cooked to order from local produce are rooted in Yorkshire tradition yet refined with French flair, yielding an immaculate and happy mix of classic and contemporary cooking, overseen by head chef, Mark Lilley. Start with a warm salad of black pudding and bacon or chicken liver pâté, continue with minted lamb Henry with rosemary mash, beef bourguignon with Parmesan risotto, or a classic beer battered cod and chips. Resist the rhubarb crumble if you can and don't miss the summer barbecues.

An awful expereince. I ordered a roast beef dinner, the beef was chewy and processed, the potato hard and the yorkshire pudding burnt to a cinder. Cold restaurant and cold unfriendly staff. We were told there was nothing wrong with the black, burnt yorkshire pudding.. and we were asked to not return, don't worry we won't!
