Jolly Sailor Inn

This timber-framed 16th-century quayside inn draws yachtsmen and landlubbers alike for a pint of Adnams while they ponder the charms of this reputed smugglers' haunt. Fishermen still use the sheltered anchorage protected by Orford Ness's shingle bank, and bird-watchers gather here to see the unique habitat and breeding grounds of Havergate Island. Views over the marshes, saltings and castle from the pub's extensive garden are more reasons to tarry, and perhaps order a light bite of Suffolk game and pork terrine; or a plate of Suffolk ham with bubble-and-squeak and free-range fried egg.
