Owners Karen and Philip Burgess have made their mark at this distinctive free house, which Charles Kingsley almost certainly described in his novel Westward Ho! The stylish, restrained décor extends through the cosy dining rooms and small bar, where real ales and high class pub classics are on offer. Food is based on seasonal ingredients, sourced locally, and turned into top-notch dishes. In the New England-style restaurant you might start with corned beef terrine with mustard dressing, followed by pan-fried lamb's kidneys, bacon, black pudding and red wine sauce. After your meal, you can even browse for beautiful accessories and homeware in the inn's own boutique.
