The Trout Inn

195 Godstow Road, LOWER WOLVERCOTE, OX2 8PN

This utterly captivating waterside inn is threaded into the structure of one of Oxford's oldest buildings. A favourite with undergraduates, its renown was assured when Morse and Lewis sat on the terrace below the weir, supping local beers in several episodes of the iconic television detective series filmed here. It was already ancient when Lewis Carroll, and later CS Lewis took inspiration here; centuries before them it was a hospice for Godstow Nunnery, on the opposite bank of The Thames. With leaded windows, great oak beams, flagged floors and fireplaces glowing in winter, it is arguably Oxford's most atmospheric inn, enhanced by modern comforts. The comprehensive, top-notch menu has a distinct Italian lineage, with starters of baked mushrooms, spinach, Dolcelatte and Stiratta Romagna or Mediterranean mezze setting the scene for a wide range of freshly made pastas and pizzas, backed up by reliable modern British fare like whole baked trout with pancetta, leek white wine sauce and watercress salad, or roast rump of lamb, sauce soubise, asparagus, pancetta, button onions and baby potatoes.

Your description is a bit outdated. In 2007 the new managers removed most the internal atmosphere so it fits in with the davidsingleton pubs chain modern look. You either like it or wonder how anyone could be so stupid as destroy the sense of continuity and history. Still lovely outside to sit by the river and have a pretty dear drink.

I will write a review of this restaurant if I can book a table there. I tried to ring to them for 10 minutes but got cut off each time. No e-mail either.
