The green and leafy expanse of Putney Common is the view from tables outside this long-established pub, out in the 'burbs and just a short stroll from the Thames Embankment; their beer garden is part of the Common. A light, bright and airy interior belies the rather traditional look of the place; revamped a few years ago, the emphasis is on good dining in a crisp, chic environment where locals are still welcomed to sup at the bar, with Sharp's Doom Bar or Fuller's London Pride the pick of the beers. Meals, in the bar or restaurant area, are a modern take on traditional favourites, such as a starter of Welsh rarebit with fresh beef tomato and pan-fried smoked bacon, or shredded duck, poached pear and walnut salad with Stilton dressing. Mains take on a seasonal look to reflect the desire to use only the freshest ingredients; look for a linguini of fresh crab, parsley, cherry tomatoes, garlic and chilli; grilled Mediterranean sea bass with Jerusalem artichoke purée and wilted spinach; or honey roast belly of pork, glazed apple and Puy lentils. Sunday roasts and rotisserie free-range chickens are a favourite with families.
