Main Street, KIRKBY OVERBLOW, HG3 1HD
For those who might be wondering, Overblow is a corruption of oreblow, a reference to the village's iron-smelting past. Built of local stone in the 1880s, this traditional country pub still offers open log fires and the attraction of an enclosed garden. Home-cooked, locally sourced food includes what the menu calls 'Shoulder of Mutton', but is in fact braised Masham lamb in mint and redcurrant gravy; grilled Wensleydale gammon and chips; chicken kohlpari biryani; and a generous selection of gluten-free dishes. On the specials board, look for pan-fried Nidderdale chicken fillet; and squid rings in spicy tomato sauce with tagliatelle.
