The Royal Inn

HORSEBRIDGE, Nr Tavistock, PL19 8PJ

The pub, with a façade enlivened by superb pointed arched windows, was once a nunnery until Henry VIII dissolved the monastery. Standing near a bridge built over the Tamar in 1437 by Benedictine monks, it became the Packhorse Inn until Charles I pitched up one day - his seal is in the doorstep. Beef for the steaks, casseroles and stews, and the pheasant and venison on the specials board are all locally supplied. Chilli cheese tortillas are much appreciated; so is the absence of noisy machines.
