Main Street, HOGNASTON, Ashbourne, DE6 1PR
Here in 1997 to attend a wedding, John F Kennedy's son and his wife stayed at this whitewashed, 17th-century village pub overlooking Carsington Water. With beams, bare brick, old photos, bric-a-brac and antique furniture spread liberally around an open-fire warmed interior, traditional character isn't hard to find. Settle with a pint, perhaps from the Wincle Brewery in Cheshire, and start considering the menu, on which might appear fresh Conwy mussels cooked in dark ale; oven-roasted sea bass with beurre blanc sauce; chicken breast and leg with garlic sauce; and wild mushroom arancini. In the garden is a boules court.
