Milecastle Inn

A traditional pub decorated with horse brasses and local pictures, the Milecastle occupies a wonderfully remote and peaceful location high on the moorland edge. One horizon is serrated by the line of Hadrian's Wall and there are easy walks up the lane past Roman camps to reach Milecastle 42 beside the Wall at Cawfield Crags. Tasty beers from Newcastle's Big Lamp Brewery are ample reward for a breezy stroll, accompanied perhaps by game pâté with toast; chicken curry with rice and chips; or a choice of pies. A roaring winter fire takes the chill, or you could sit outside and enjoy the curlew-haunted countryside.
