The Ducane
The Village,
GREAT BRAXTED,
Witham,
CM8 3EJ
Refurbished with style and flair by award-winning chef Jonathan Brown and partner Louise Partis, this modern-looking pub dates from 1935 and forms part of a village that was displaced by Lord Du Cane in the 19th century. Expect a fresh, modern interior, a warm welcome and a great selection of ales from Maldon, Mersea Island, Farmers and Wibblers. Jonathan's innovative menus champion local produce and local suppliers, including Braxted beef and lamb, Colchester oysters and seasonal goodies (plums, quince, pears and figs) from the gardens and allotments of local residents. A superb value set menu might open with cream of sweet potato, chestnut and chick pea soup with croûtons and locally baked bread; or pressing of duck confit, ham hock with cranberry and port compôte followed by slow-braised locally reared beef with red wine and thyme, topped with a herb crust and served with new potatoes; or twice baked cheddar cheese soufflé. For dessert, maybe bread-and-butter pudding with orange, cinnamon and mixed spices, maple syrup drizzle and vanilla ice cream; or rich dark chocolate ganache cake, whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Dishes from the carte keep with the modern British theme: you could kick off with potted shrimps with leek, white crab and spring onion and herb butter with tossed salad and toast followed by slow braised pork belly with bubble and squeak, apple compôte, sage gravy and spring greens, then finish with sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. For children there is an excellent separate menu of home-cooked favourites such as ham, egg and chips, fish and chips or pasta with tomato sauce and cheese. The pub hosts regular steak and curry nights and a beer festival. Booking for meals may be required.

Excellent meal as one would expect from an award winning restaurant, looks like a pub but top quality food and service. Recommended by friends well worth the visit, London food at rural prices. You have to try this place out.
