The Helyar Arms
Moor Lane,
EAST COKER,
BA22 9JR
This Grade II listed building dates back in part to 1468 and reputedly takes its name from Archdeacon Helyar, a chaplain to Queen Elizabeth I. Log fires warm the charming old world bar, where Butcombe, Black Sheep and Hobgoblin ales are backed by Stowford Press and Taunton Traditional ciders. There's a skittle alley, comfortable accommodation and a separate restaurant occupying an original apple loft. The kitchen makes full use of local produce, including wood pigeon, rabbit, venison, pheasant and fish from the south Devon coast. There's plenty of choice, from sandwiches and lighter bites (maybe tagliatelle with smoked haddock, saffron and prawns) to starters such as game terrine with winter chutney and walnut bread followed by toad in the hole with bubble and squeak and a jug of gravy. Succulent steaks can be cut to order and grilled, plus their steak sandwich is award winning. All puddings are home made, and coffees and teas come with home-made petits fours.

Sadly the pub seems to have gone down hill dramatically since our last stay about a year ago. Our food on the Sunday evening tasted like it had been micro-waved, the Yorkshire pudding tasted like cardboard, while the roast meats were very fatty. When we returned after a day out on Monday our rooms hadn't been cleaned/serviced. The overall impression was that no one really cared. It would seem that the management have taken their eye of the ball, which is a real shame.
