The Helyar Arms
Moor Lane,
EAST COKER,
BA22 9JR
In one of Somerset's most picturesque villages, parts of this lovely old pub date back to the mid 15th century. Named after Archdeacon Helyar, a chaplain to Queen Elizabeth I, the pub retains much of its original character with log fires in the charming old world bar, where Butcombe and Exmoor ales are backed by Thatcher's and Taunton Traditional ciders. The kitchen makes full use of local produce, including Somerset game and fish from the south Devon coast. There's plenty of choice, from sandwiches and lighter bites starters such as pea and mint blini with Scottish smoked salmon and lime crème fraîche followed by confit Creedy Carver duck leg with bubble-and-squeak and Madeira jus. Succulent local steaks can be cut to order and grilled, plus their steak sandwich has won awards. All puddings are home made and might include glazed lemon and lime tart. Comfortable accommodation available.

Sadly the pub seems to have gone down hill dramatically since our last stay about a year ago. Our food on the Sunday evening tasted like it had been micro-waved, the Yorkshire pudding tasted like cardboard, while the roast meats were very fatty. When we returned after a day out on Monday our rooms hadn't been cleaned/serviced. The overall impression was that no one really cared. It would seem that the management have taken their eye of the ball, which is a real shame.
