EARTHAM, PO18 0LT
First appearing on an 1840 tithe map, this appealing pub is a tad off the beaten track in a quiet South Downs National Park village. Open fires act as magnets on cold days, on warm ones it's the pretty garden that attracts. Devoted to British produce, mostly local, one of its real ales is Langham Hip Hop, from nine crow-flying miles away. The menu's an easy read, with confit duck leg, fondant potato, braised red cabbage and spiced orange jus; seared sea bass fillet, pancetta, crushed lemon-scented new potatoes with sweet and sour Grand Marnier sauce as typical dishes.
