Hills Lane, COOKHAM DEAN, SL6 9NT
The artist Stanley Spencer called Cookham, his birthplace and where he lived most of his life, 'a village in Heaven'. His museum is less than two miles away from this charming, low-beamed 17th-century pub, warmed when nature demands by open fires. A simple menu lists fillet of halibut with saffron and garden pea risotto; rocket pesto-stuffed breast of corn-fed chicken, wrapped in pancetta, with tenderstem broccoli; and mushroom arancini with red pepper coulis and truffle oil. Desserts include sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and ice cream; and brie de meaux cheese and biscuits with celery and apple chutney.
