Set well back from the main road in the hamlet of Eaton, this 400-year-old Cheshire-brick inn is a far cry from its genesis as a farmers' local in a farmhouse. It's now a popular destination gastro-pub with a very accomplished menu, available throughout the very traditional interior or in the restaurant housed in a remarkable cruck barn moved here from Wales. From bar snacks such as grilled fresh sardines, the choice of dishes balloons to include pink roasted duck breast, with additional changing specials. Handy for visiting Gawsworth Hall and Macclesfield's museums, the comfortable, en suite rooms are in a separate annexe. Beers are largely from local Cheshire craft breweries.
