The Old Swan
58 High Street,
CHEDDINGTON,
Leighton Buzzard,
LU7 0RQ
Formed out of three cottages in the 15th century, this delightful thatched pub is known not only for its real ales and traditional charm but also for its food. Using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and game, fish and seafood supplies from sustainable sources, the menus offer modern British dishes. Lunchtime food ranges from hot paninis and ciabatta sandwiches to smaller and larger plates like potato cakes with salmon and mascarpone. Imaginative evening meals could be chickpea terrine or chicken saltimbocca. Children are made very welcome and there's a good play area in the attractive garden.

The quality of the food really let down the venue. The mashed potato was lumpy, the french beans raw, the ends not even trimmed. The steak sirloin steak was of poor quality and had a large chunk of gristle. Steak and chips consisted of this poor cut of steak, 6 chips and a tiny garnish. Definitely not value for money. An expensive not pleasant night out.

The service was very slow and we found the portions small. Two of our party had the field mushroom which were about 3cm across. Another starter was salmon and marscapone quenelles on a bed of rocket, when it was delivered to the table the waiter asked who ordered the fishcakes! One main was chilli beef on coconut rice, the beef was a few tiny slivers. The food on the whole was tasty but the portion sizes were very small. We were not the only table that passed comments on the portions.

This pretty thatched pub is over 600 years old and has great character including an inglenook fireplace - I visited with my family and we found a very warm welcome with great service and lovely food! A must try for visitors to the Chilterns.
