The Royal Oak
High Street,
BROOKLAND,
Romney Marsh,
TN29 9QR
The Royal Oak was built as a house in 1570 and connected to the church of St Augustine, one of only four churches in England with a separate bell tower. Since 1736 the Grade II listed marshland pub has been providing shelter and sustenance to locals and visitors to Romney Marsh. Its uncluttered, smart interior is a pleasing combination of original features and modern furnishings. The menus cater for everything from speedy lunchtime snacks to leisurely three-course dining. Regularly changing dishes draw on local, seasonal produce. Options could include pan-seared breasts of local wood pigeon; roasted stuffed red peppers; slow-cooked shank of Romney Marsh lamb; and chargrilled beef burger. The Sunday lunch menu offers traditional roasts of beef or lamb served with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and gravy. Every Wednesday evening is an inglenook spit-roast (booking essential). A well-kept and tranquil garden borders the churchyard.

My husband and I had a very disappointing experience at The Royal Oak. I oredered slow roasted belly of pork with mashed potatoes and vegetables. They brought me a completely black chunk of pure fat. The parsnips were not peeled, and the chef had not cut off the ends and the black spots. The vegetables that came with my husband's order were floating in oil, and half of them were burnt. The waitress kindly replaced my order, but we were still charged £30 for the meal.
