Set opposite the ancient church of St Brynach, this smartly-converted row of white-painted stone cottages enjoys the awesome backdrop of the Brecon Beacons. Originally a coaching inn in the 17th century, it is now an unpretentious gastro-pub with character and atmosphere, featuring stone walls, exposed oak beams, stone-flagged floors, wooden furniture and bar counter, plus log fires, leather sofas, atmospheric lighting, and a warm and cosy feel. Eat in the spacious Flagstone Restaurant, or more informally in the bar, which also offers a lighter snack menu and Brains Bitter on handpump. With imaginative menus changing monthly, enjoy crisp, honest dishes in the unpretentious gastro-pub mould, all freshly prepared using locally sourced produce, with daily fish specials listed on the chalkboard. Lunch might be a crispy Thai style spring roll with tempura battered scallops, sweet and sour apple and Thai dressing followed by traditional Welsh lamb cawl with Welsh cheese and freshly baked bread. Typical evening dishes include Chinese spiced Gressingham duck breast with spiced sweet potatoes, roast plums and sweet and sour sauce, and peppered local venison haunch with potato and celeriac mash and red wine jus. There's also a selection from the grill.
