Bath Road, BOX, SN13 8AE
The former station hotel, built by Brunel for the workers who were building Box Tunnel, was transformed from a shabby roadside drinking pub to a stylish inn by Mark Warburton. The contemporary interior makes good use of wood and flagstone flooring, high-backed oak chairs, leather loungers and handcrafted tables around the bar, where inviting sandwiches (roast ham, tomato and mustard; or cheese with salad and chutney) and pub classics like haddock and chips hold sway. The main menu ranges from veal chop with red cabbage, lyonnaise potatoes, roasted mushrooms and parmesan; or baked pepper with caponata salad, goats' cheese and asparagus; to the pub's speciality fish dishes and great steaks. Swish bedrooms complete the picture.
