Just beyond this converted farmhouse, the lane gives way to marked moorland paths and tracks into the spectacular wooded chasm of the Cheesden Gorge. Ramblers and horse-riders rest awhile at this comfy, family-friendly pub, which offers classic pub meals and some interesting specials: Lancashire hotpot, roast of the day, Thai tuna sizzler, Vietnamese chicken soup, gammon steak, and Bury black pudding and chorizo salad. Good vegetarian dishes are available too, such as five bean chilli, veggie burger, Mexican nachos, vegetable curry, and cheese and onion pie. Head out to the patio on warmer days for fine views over farmland high above Bury.
