The team behind Fischer's Restaurant in nearby Baslow Hall have transformed the former Prince of Wales pub into a thoroughly modern bar and restaurant. Set in a peaceful village overlooking the church and open for coffee from 10am, Rowley's offers an informal mix of stone-flagged bar area, where you can sup a pint of local ale by the log-burning stove, alongside the chic, more contemporary feel of its three dining areas upstairs. Very much a dining destination (the food has been awarded two AA Rosettes), the kitchen is headed by Craig Skinner under the watchful eye of Rupert Rowley, award-winning head chef of Fischer's. Menus feature an appealing mix of modern and traditional British dishes, with an emphasis on quality local produce. At lunch, simply presented dishes may take in ham hock terrine with piccalilli followed by slow-roasted Derbyshire pork belly with celeriac mash, curly kale and wholegrain mustard sauce. In the evening the kitchen shifts up a gear, offering the likes of pan-fried black pudding sausage with champ potatoes, crispy air dried ham and a soft poached hen's egg ahead of a main course of corn-fed chicken breast stuffed with chorizo, wrapped in pancetta and served with soft polenta and pipérade. Attractive meat-free options include butternut squash risotto with parmesan shavings and baked Puy lentil moussaka with griddled oregano flatbread and Yorkshire Fine Fettle cheese. For dessert, maybe buttermilk pannacotta with winter berry compôte and toasted granola, or warm Yorkshire parkin with spiced custard and banana ice cream. Children's choices are home made by the chefs too.
