The King's Arms

Main Street, ASKRIGG, DL8 3HQ

This elegant, 18th-century coaching inn was used as the fictional Drover's Arms, vet James Herriot's favourite watering hole in the BBC drama All Creatures Great and Small. Owned by North Yorkshire hotelier Charles Cody, the inn has a big inglenook fireplace in the oak-panelled bar, where photographs show cast members relaxing between takes. The food, written up daily on an impressive mirror behind the bar, is based on top quality produce, such as game from the surrounding moors, and fish fresh from Hartlepool. Look also for loin of local lamb; pan-fried salmon; and wild mushroom risotto.
