AA patrol of the year Tony Rich and other AA technical experts spent last week (4-6 September) judging a prestigious competition to find the best breakdown patrol on continental Europe.

After winning the event in 2011 at the first time of entering, the AA was invited to set and judge the technical challenges for the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) Road Patrol Contest hosted by Croatian motoring club HAK (Hrvatski Autoklub) in Šibenik, Croatia.

  • AA judged FIA technical contest to find top patrol in Europe
  • AA involved since winning contest in 2011
  • Competition in Šibenik, Croatia, won by hosts HAK

The annual competition – now in its tenth year – saw patrols from 13 continental European motoring clubs assessed on their theoretical and practical knowledge of solving vehicle faults, including the latest hybrid cars. It was won by hosts HAK of Croatia. Runner-up was TCS (Touring Club de Suisse) of Switzerland and LAMB (Auto moto Society of Latvia) was third.

The job of a patrol is increasingly demanding as we work on any vehicle on the road – car, motorbike or commercial vehicle – so there’s a constant need to maintain a high level of technical expertise

Tony Rich, AA patrol of the year

Tony Rich says: “Breakdown assistance is the core activity for most motoring clubs and the FIA competition aims to share best practice and raise technical standards across Europe.

“The job of a patrol is increasingly demanding as we work on any vehicle on the road – car, motorbike or commercial vehicle – so there’s a constant need to maintain a high level of technical expertise.

“It was a great week with the clubs in Europe demonstrating a very high standard. Congratulations to winners HAK of Croatia.”

We were delighted that the FIA invited us to judge its contest, recognising that we help to set the technical benchmark – not only in the UK but in Europe

Setting the ‘yellow’ standard

Steve Dewey, AA road operations director, says: “After winning in 2011, we were delighted that the FIA invited us to judge its contest, recognising that we help to set the technical benchmark – not only in the UK but in Europe – for fixing vehicles at the roadside.

“As vehicle technology evolves, we invest heavily in the latest equipment and training to ensure our patrols continue to give the best possible service to our members.”

Recently, the AA was rated top breakdown cover provider by Which? (September 2013). The authoritative consumer group ranked the AA number one for both personal and car manufacturer-branded cover and it was also best for fixing cars at the roadside. Which? also rated the AA top provider of European breakdown cover.
