Frequently Asked Questions
All you need to know about Private Medical Insurance
About medical treatment
What is an out-patient?
A patient who attends a hospital, consulting room, or out-patient clinic, and is not admitted as a day-patient or an in-patient.
What is hospital-at-home?
This is treatment provided at home or at another clinically appropriate setting, to administer intravenous chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer or intravenous antibiotics, which otherwise would require you to be admitted for in-patient treatment or day-patient treatment.
What is an in-patient and a day-patient?
An in-patient is a person who is admitted to hospital and who occupies a bed overnight or longer, for medical reasons.
A day-patient is a person who is admitted to a hospital or day-patient unit because they need a period of medically supervised recovery, but does not occupy a bed overnight.
What is meant by the six-week rule?
If you choose to apply the six-week rule to your policy, this will reduce the cost of your premium.
If the NHS can provide in-patient or day-patient treatment or any out-patient surgical procedures within six weeks after the date on which the treatment should take place, then you'll receive your treatment under the NHS.
If they can't provide your treatment within six weeks, then you'll be able to go private straight away.
