Heston and The Hinds Head

New owner for village pub

A new pub with great food is a story. When it is opened by Heston Blumenthal, chef patron of The Fat Duck, five AA rosettes and at the cutting edge of international gastronomy, this is serious news.

In October last year, Heston bought the Hinds Head, the village pub in the centre of Bray, and he is keeping it very much as a traditional English inn. The bar is full of genuine atmosphere, wide and open with gleaming wood panelling, parquet floor, log fire and a choice of traditional beers. Visitors can dine in the bar (no booking) or in a restaurant area (clothed tables which may be reserved).

And the food? No fusion, no appliance of science, the menu offers fabulous versions of British dishes – Lancashire hotpot, potted shrimps, soused herrings, Gloucester Old Spot pork chop with pease pudding. Dishes we have tried so far have been full of flavour, cooked with great care and have no fuss about them at all. Leave room for the Treacle Tart – rich but not heavy, succulent but not sweet. Seconds please.
