Golf was first played here around 1400 and the Old Course is acknowledged worldwide as the Home of Golf. The Old Course has played host to the greatest golfers in the world and many of golf's most dramatic moments. The New Course (6625yds) was opened in 1895, having been laid out by Old Tom Morris. The Jubilee was opened in 1897 and is 6742yds long from the medal tees. A shorter version of the Jubilee Course is also available, known as the Bronze Course, measuring 5573yds. There is no handicap limit for the shorter course and it is best for lower and middle handicap golfers. The Strathtyrum has a shorter, less testing layout, best for high handicap golfers. The nine-hole Balgrove Course, upgraded and re-opened in 1993, is best for beginners and children. The cliff top Castle Course opened in 2008. The facilities and courses at St Andrews make this the largest golf complex in Europe.
