The original course at Muirfield was designed by Old Tom Morris in 1891 but the current course was designed by Harry Colt. It is generally considered to be one of the top ten courses in the world. The club itself has an excellent pedigree: it was founded in 1744, making it just 10 years older than the Royal and Ancient. Muirfield is the only course to have hosted the Open (15 times, the most recent in 2002), the Amateur, the Mid Amateur, the Senior British Open, the Ryder Cup, the Walker Cup, the Home Internationals and the Curtis Cup. It is consistently ranked as one of the world's most exclusive golf courses and is hosting the Open Championship in 2013. The course has recently been re-designed by Martin Hawtree.
