The Edinburgh International Book Festival is one of the biggest literary festivals in the English-speaking world. Each year it welcomes some 700 writers to Charlotte Square Gardens to appear in 750 events in just 17 days. They read from and discuss their work, while book tents sell all the latest titles and there are also lectures, panel discussions and book signings. Children are not forgotten, with a major programme of events, readings and workshops.

It began in 1983, first as an offshoot of the Edinburgh International Festival and then became an independent biennial event before, in 1997, becoming an annual literary shindig with over 100,000 visitors every year.

Full festival details are announced in June.
