Aquario di Genova
This aquarium was built for The Expo 1992 and it said to be the largest aquarium in Europe and one of the most visited cultural sites in Italy.
And let's face it, there's little chance of seeing penguins, sealions and crocs in the depths of Italy.
Split into six regions from tropical to arctic, the aquarium pays homage to all walks of underwater life.
Where is it?
The aquarium is in Genoa, which is roughly 11 hours' drive from Calais on the north coast of France. It's a 12-hour drive from Santander, but what a route! It takes you through the Pyrenees and along the south of France.

Bioparc Zoo
Founded in 1911, this botanical-garden-cum-zoo features all the favourites. Reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals are housed here and you can take part in guided walks and watch them being fed. There are also breeding programs for endangered species.
Where is it?
It's in Rome, which is a whopping 15.5-hour drive from Calais. But let's face it, you've got some of the best-loved world heritage sites when you get there.
