Camping in Europe

Camping and caravanning in Europe

With the pound languishing in the doldrums, the search for guaranteed sun for the whole family is becoming more and more expensive.

So it comes as no surprise, Jeremy Clarkson notwithstanding, that caravanning is back in vogue with demand soaring, according to The Caravan Company.

The second-hand caravan sellers have seen a boost in sales as people clamour to find recession-proof ways to holiday.

And with AA Insurance launching their new Essentials caravan cover, which is designed for lower-value caravans and gives you up to 30 days' worth of insurance cover in Europe, now has never been a better time to hit the open road.

If the thought of camping leaves you cold, but you fancy the drive and you're a Member of the AA, you can take advantage of hotels savings as part of the Show Your Card! scheme – see the travel benefits for AA Members.

However, having a home you can pack up and take with you will allow you to make the most of the area. We've rounded up a host of activities and events in some popular European camping and caravanning destinations.

Booking a European campsite

Once you've found the perfect area, it's time to book a campsite. According to the 2009 edition of Caravan & Camping Guide for France, many sites ask for a booking fee in advance, especially peak season and some will set a minimum length of stay.

Download this letter, which is a starter for 10 when it comes to requesting a booking, if you're heading to France.

Albeit rarely, some sites see your deposit as a booking fee, so your cash will automatically become non-refundable. Be sure to check all this at the time of booking.

Before you travel

Insurance is a must and the AA's Standard Caravan Insurance cover gives you unlimited European cover, generous loss-of-use benefits and discounts for good security. Market or agreed value is also available.

It may surprise you to know that bringing a broken down vehicle back to the UK could cost you £1,000 on average (exchange-rate dependent, of course). Imagine how the cost could skyrocket if you throw in a trailer or a caravan to boot.

That's where AA European Breakdown Cover comes in handy. Just phone our 24-hour English-speaking helpline and we will arrange emergency roadside repairs and if necessary towage to the nearest garage. If you have to wait for repair work we will arrange and contribute towards the cost of alternative travel AND emergency accommodation. And, if your vehicle can't be repaired abroad we will organise bringing your vehicle back to the UK for you.

Of course, you don't have to camp. If you fancy driving across to Europe but can do without the caravan, why not take advantage of your AA Member benefits? Find out what's on offer at AA Members' Club.

And you're off…

Despite many choosing to stay in Britain, but with Easter coming up Europe is still a firm family favourite in the destination stakes. We've rounded up a couple of the best countries to park your wheels or pitch your tent, along with activities to keep the whole family amused.
