Recognised as a Collection of National Significance, the Hunterian is Scotland's oldest public museum. Founded in 1807, following a bequest by Dr William Hunter, collections include scientific instruments used by James Watt, Joseph Lister and Lord Kelvin; Dr Hunter's anatomical teaching collection; objects from Captain Cook's Pacific voyages, and Roman artefacts. The Hunterian also houses the Hunterian Art Gallery which contains collections of the works of James Whistler and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
