For a claim to be considered you must call the AA for breakdown assistance.

Once you've nominated a vehicle for Breakdown Repair Cover, you'll need to keep it serviced in line with the manufacturer's recommendations. Servicing must be done by a suitable garage business.

A claim on your Breakdown Repair Cover cannot be for any faults that occur during the first 14 days of cover. If you change your vehicle you will also not be able to claim for 14 days after making the change.

Parts and garage labour

Breakdown Repair Cover costs from costs from £4.91 per month depending on the age of your car, van or motorbike. You can make up to five claims per year, benefiting from £500 per claim. So you could save up to £2,500 on breakdown repairs.

We towed Ms A from Bridgend to a garage after diagnosing that the head gasket had blown and her car engine had cooked. Ms A claimed £465 towards car parts and labour and still has four claims in hand.

Which vehicle engine parts are covered?

Some everyday repairs can be surprisingly expensive if your car breaks down and needs replacement parts. AA Breakdown Repair Cover can help towards the costs of some of the most common breakdown faults. Here are some average claim amounts based on what we've paid out:

• the starter battery – £72
• the starter motor – £219
• alternator failure – £298
• clutch assembly failure – £286
• the head gasket – £369

We can even help with other costly breakdown bills, such as:

• radiator replacement – average claim = £225
• cam belt failure – average claim = £107

Our claims service

If our patrol can't complete the repairs at the roadside, we'll arrange for a garage to carry out the repair work. Our claim team can talk to the garage on your behalf, so you don't have to get involved with the technical details. And we can even arrange to pay the breakdown repair bill directly with the garage.

Our experienced Claims Helpline team, some of whom are former AA patrols, will help ensure that the process of getting your vehicle or car repaired is as simple, quick and hassle-free as possible.

AA members – save money on your vehicle repairs

We'll always do our best to get you back on the road after a beakdown. But sometimes there's no escaping the expense of replacement parts and repairs. Our Breakdown Repair Cover can help cover these costs following a breakdown.

• cover up to four vehicles
• get up to five paid claims per year
• pay only £35 excess on repair bills up to £500

If a garage repair is necessary after AA breakdown assistance, we'll arrange to pay the bill and help ensure the repair is as hassle-free as possible.
